Check the packaging to see if the downrod is included and note the size. Ceiling height in feet minus 9 includes the fan height downrod length for example if your ceiling is 12 high you will need a 3 downrod to ensure the fan is positioned at the proper height. For example if your ceiling is 12 feet high and your ceiling fan is 12 inches in height you will need a 24 inch downrod to mount the ceiling fan between eight and nine feet above the floor. Most ceiling fans come ready to install on an 8 ceiling.

For taller ceilings many fan manufacturers suggest dropping a ceiling fan all the way down to 8 to 9 feet from floor level. Made for rooms with high ceilings typically 8 feet or higher. 9 ft ceiling 6 in downrod. However for extra tall ceilings you may need a longer downrod than provided.

If your ceiling is at least 8 high you may want to consider a fan with a short downrod rather than a flush mounted fan.
